You asked
Please can you provide me with the following information & data.
The number of violent offences carried out by a man towards a Trans person in recent years and if possible, inclusive of 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 & 2024.
We said
Thank you for your request.
We primarily produce crime statistics from two main sources:
- Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) – a household victimisation survey that asks respondents about their experiences of crime, regardless of whether the incident was reported to the police.
- Police recorded crime (from the Home Office) – offences that are reported to and/or recorded by police forces in England and Wales. Unfortunately, we do not produce statistics on perpetrators of knife crime.
Our Nature of violent crime: appendix tables presents the proportion of people who have been a victim of violence, with or without injury, in England and Wales by gender identity for year ending (YE) March 2024 and YE March 2023.
These estimates are produced using data from the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW). We started asking about respondents' gender identity in October 2019 on the self-completion module of the CSEW. Data on gender identity were not collected in YE March 2021 or YE March 2022, as the CSEW was suspended due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. As we only collected six months of data on gender identity for the YE March 2020, we created analysis showing a prevalence estimate for CSEW headline crime. We were unable to do so for individual crime types because of the low sample size.
Our nature of crime: violence tables do present data on perpetrator characteristics, including sex (Table 8a). However, these estimates are not further broken down by victim characteristics.
Unfortunately, we have not created the exact information you have requested from the CSEW. In order to answer your request, we would need to use statistical skill and judgement to create an ad hoc analysis. Under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2000, public authorities are not obliged to create information in response to requests. Therefore, this information is not held.
Our publications and data concern crime as it is experienced by victims. The Ministry of Justice publish data on offenders and may be able to help you further. They can be contacted at CJS_Statistics@justice.gov.uk.
If you have any other queries related to crime as it is experienced by the victim in the future, you can email crimestatistics@ons.gov.uk and we will endeavour to help.
